    Batalha Monastery in Portugal

    South of Leiria, you should visit the Monastery of Batalha, a masterpiece of Portuguese Gothic and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built by King Joao in gratitude for the fact that in 1385 Portuguese troops defeated the Castilian army, thereby ensuring the country's independence.
